The Amazing Race, sometimes referred to as TAR, is a reality television game show in which teams of two people (with one exception), who have some form of a preexisting personal relationship, race around the world in competition with other teams. Contestants strive to arrive first at “pit stops” at the end of each leg of the race to win prizes and avoid coming in last, which carries the possibility of elimination or a significant disadvantage in the following leg. Contestants travel to and within multiple countries in a variety of transportation modes, including planes, taxis, rental cars, trains, buses and boats. The clues in each leg point the teams to the next destination or direct them to perform a task, either together or by a single member. These challenges are related in some manner to the country or culture where they are located. Teams are progressively eliminated until three teams are left; at that point, the team that arrives first in the final leg is awarded a large cash grand prize, usually one million U.S. dollars.

Created by Elise Doganieri and Bertram van Munster, the original series has aired in the United States since 2001 and has earned seven Primetime Emmy Awards, including all six “Outstanding Reality-Competition Program” awards that have been given. Emmy-award-winning New Zealand television personality Phil Keoghan has been the popular host of the show since its inception. Hollywood mega-producer Jerry Bruckheimer has been TAR’s main producer. The show has branched out to include a number of international versions following a similar format.

[edit] The Amazing Race around the world

The original version of The Amazing Race is the American version, which debuted on CBS in September 2001. In October 2005, CBS optioned The Amazing Race for franchising to other countries. Buena Vista International Television-Asia Pacific (BVITV-AP) and Sony Pictures Television International’s AXN Asia announced an Asian edition of the race, billed as The Amazing Race Asia, that same month.[27] Applications ran from February to the end of March 2006.[28] Filming was begun in June. Its first season premiered on November 9, 2006 and concluded on February 1, 2007.

During 2005, AXN Central Europe announced a version of the show to be called The Amazing Race Central Europe. Applications are closed with the submission of 2,500 applicants, with filming expected to have occurred in 2006 and broadcast from September 2006.[29] The show has yet to air and has been pulled from AXN’s website, fueling rumors of cancellation.

In addition, a South-American independent production company announced in late 2006 that it would be producing a Brazilian version in 2007, to be called The Amazing Race: A Corrida Milionária, and to be aired in a purchased time slot in the Brazilian network RedeTV!. Applications were open from January until July, and filming occurred during August and September. The first season premiered on October 13, 2007 and concluded on January 5, 2008.[30]

On April 8, 2008, Israel’s television Reshet had licensed to produce the local version of the show, known as Ha’Merotz La’Million (The Race to the Million in English). It will be filming across Asia and scheduled to be premiered later this year.[31]

On October 15, 2008, a Latin American version of the show was announced by the Discovery Channel Latin America in association with Disney. The show is to be filmed in early 2009 for broadcast late in that year across Latin America and the Caribbean. [32]

Talk about dragging the launch of a car out! The first official photos of the Ferrari California were published months ago. But here at the Paris show is the California’s true world premier. And it’s worth the wait to see it in the flesh. From a fully retractable hardtop to a dual-clutch transmission to the first-ever production Ferrari with a front-mounted V-8, the Ferrari California is packed with the latest and greatest from the engineers in Maranello…despite the fact the California is not Ferrari’s flagship model.

Ferrari says the California “is aimed at owners who desire a car which embodies everything the Prancing Horse represents in terms of sporty design and innovation, but also seek a car with greater versatility than ever.” This newest prancing horse is not a “baby Ferrari.” It is, in fact, a brand-new model complementing, and similar in size to, the racier F430 — except the California has more flexibility in packaging. In addition to having a power retractable hardtop, the California can be ordered in a 2+2 configuration — children seating only — or for more storage space for weekend outings. There is even a trunk pass-through for skis for those who want to hit the slopes in the winter.

Despite a raft of new technologies, the California doesn’t forget Ferrari’s past. The car’s styling uses several nostalgic elements from the Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder from the late 1950s and early 1960s. Those elements include the large air intake on the hood, the side gills just aft of the front wheels, near identical grillework and similarly swoopy rear fenders. And photos don’t do this car justice — we must say, the Ferrari California looks absolutely stunning in person.

Unlike the Ferrari Superamerica from a few years back, which featured a roof that simply flipped backward, the California will come only as a true retractable hardtop; when the top is down, the rear deck is completely flat — just like the Mercedes-Benz SL. The top is slick in its operation, and only takes 14 seconds to go from open to fully closed.

As with any Ferrari, the engine is the star. The 4.3-liter direct-injected flat-crank V-8 produces 460 bhp. Even more important is the car’s use of Ferrari’s first dual-clutch gearbox with not six speeds, as on every other recent Ferrari, but seven forward gears. Ferrari claims the California will be able to hit 100 km/h (62 mph) in less than 4 seconds.

In another dramatic move, Ferrari has swapped out its traditional double-wishbone suspension at the rear for a multilink setup on the California. And those amazing (but incredibly expensive, lightweight and fade-resistant) Brembo carbon-ceramic brake discs seen on so many Ferraris these days? Standard issue on the California.

Ferrari started production of the California late this summer in a brand-new building in Maranello. It will be on sale in Europe by the end of the year. U.S. sales will follow later, probably as a 2009 model and priced in the range of the F430.

Alyson Lee Hannigan (born March 24, 1974) is an American actor. She currently plays Lily Aldrin in the CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother, but is also well known for her previous role as Willow Rosenberg on the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. She also played flautist Michelle Flaherty in the American Pie film series.

Early life

Hannigan was born in Washington, D.C., the daughter of Emilie Posner, a real estate agent, and Al Hannigan, a truck driver.[1][2] Hannigan is Jewish on her mother’s side,[3] and also has Irish ancestry.[4] Her parents divorced a year after her birth and she was raised mostly by her mother in Atlanta.

Although Hannigan had appeared in an industrial film for “Active Parenting” as a baby, as well as starred in a commercial for the Duncan Hines cookie mix in 1978, it was not until she moved to Los Angeles, California, in 1985 that she formally began her acting career. Living with her mother and attending North Hollywood High School, she successfully auditioned for agents while visiting her father in Santa Barbara. After attending North Hollywood High School she attended California State University, Northridge.

Career

Hannigan’s first major film role was in My Stepmother Is an Alien, a science fiction comedy released in 1988; one of her co-stars in the film was actor Seth Green, who would later join her in the regular cast of Buffy as her on-screen boyfriend. Then in 1989, her first regular role on a TV series came when she was cast in the short-lived ABC sitcom Free Spirit. Throughout most of the early-1990s, she appeared in commercials and supporting roles on television shows, including That ’70s Show, Picket Fences, Roseanne and Touched by an Angel.

In 1997, Hannigan was cast to play Willow Rosenberg, Buffy’s best friend, on the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer (replacing Riff Regan, who played Willow in the unaired 25-minute pilot). The show became a success, and Hannigan gained recognition, subsequently appearing in several notable films aimed at teenage audiences, including American Pie, American Pie 2, Boys and Girls, and American Wedding. By the time Buffy had ended in 2003, Hannigan was earning a $250,000 salary for each episode. She also had a guest spot on the Buffy spin-off, Angel, reprising her role of Willow in a few episodes (including most notably “Orpheus,” during the fourth season of Angel and the seventh season of Buffy), but none after Buffy finished production.

In early 2004, Hannigan made her West End debut, starring in a stage adaptation of When Harry Met Sally… at the Theatre Royal Haymarket, opposite Luke Perry.

In 2005, Hannigan returned to starring in a regular television series, appearing in the hit comedy, How I Met Your Mother, as Lily, and also playing a recurring guest role on Veronica Mars as Trina Echolls.

In February 2006, Hannigan starred as Julia Jones in Date Movie, a parody on romantic comedies.

Beyoncé Giselle Knowles (born September 4, 1981),[1] commonly known as Beyoncé (pronounced /bi???n.se?/), is an American R&B singer-songwriter, record producer, and actress. Born and raised in Houston, Texas, she enrolled in various performing arts schools, and was first exposed to singing and dancing competitions as a child. Knowles rose to fame in the late 1990s as the lead singer of girl group Destiny’s Child, the best-selling girl group of all time.

After a series of commercial successes with the group, Knowles released her debut solo album, Dangerously in Love, in June 2003. The album became one of the most-successful albums of that year, spawning the number-one singles “Crazy in Love” and “Baby Boy“. It earned Knowles five Grammy Awards in a single night in 2004, and its reception signaled her viability as a solo artist. The disbandment of Destiny’s Child in 2005 facilitated her continued success; she released her second album, B’Day, in 2006, which spawned the UK number-one singles “Déjà Vu” and “Beautiful Liar“, and the worldwide hit “Irreplaceable“. Knowles has sold more than 30 million records worldwide as a solo artist.[1] Knowles will release her third solo album titled I Am… on November 18, 2008.

The success of her solo albums has established Knowles as one of the most marketable artists in the industry. She has added acting and endorsement deals to her repertoire. In 2006, she starred in the comedy film The Pink Panther, and, in the same year, scored the main role in the film adaptation of the 1981 Broadway musical Dreamgirls, which earned her a Golden Globe nomination. Knowles launched in 2004 her family’s fashion line, House of Deréon, and among her many lucrative commercial deals are Pepsi, Tommy Hilfiger, and L’Oréal. Knowles has been with boyfriend Jay-Z since 2002, though they have been discreet about their relationship. After much speculation, they married on April 4, 2008.

Star Trek is a science fiction film directed by J. J. Abrams, written by Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, and produced by Damon Lindelof and Bryan Burk. It is the eleventh Star Trek film and features the main characters of the original Star Trek series, who are portrayed by a new cast. It follows James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) enrolling at Starfleet Academy, his first meeting with Spock (Zachary Quinto), and their battles with Romulans from the future, who are interfering with history.[5] The film is scheduled to be released on May 8, 2009 in North America and the United Kingdom.

Development of the film began in 2005 when Paramount Pictures contacted Abrams, Orci and Kurtzman for ideas to revive the franchise. The creative team contrasted Orci and Lindelof, who consider themselves “Trekkies“, and casual fans like Abrams, who all aimed to create a film that would interest a general audience. They wanted to be faithful to Star Trek canon, but also introduced elements of their favorite novels, modified continuity with the time travel storyline, and modernized the production design of the original show. Filming took place from November 2007 to April 2008 under intense secrecy. Midway through the shoot, Paramount chose to delay the release date from December 25, 2008 to May 2009, arguing the film would perform better in the summer.

Cast

  • Chris Pine as James T. Kirk. The actor dropped out of starring in a film adaptation of White Jazz to take on the role.[6] Pine felt his first audition was awful, because he could not take himself seriously as a leader, but Abrams was impressed enough to have him practice a scene with Quinto.[5] Pine cited Harrison Ford’s performances as Han Solo and Indiana Jones as an inspiration because of his “absolute grumpy manner; the accidental hero. Not to say that I modeled my version of James T. Kirk on anything in particular but I think I definitely have wanted to bring that kind of Harrison Ford humor to Kirk.”[7] After being cast, Pine sent William Shatner a letter, and received a reply wishing him good luck.[8] Beforehand, it was widely rumored that Matt Damon would play Kirk. Upon hearing the rumors, (and that Shatner gave him a “seal of approval”)[9] Damon contacted Abrams to ascertain the truth, only to be told that the Kirk in the film was a younger man and he was “too old” for the part.[10]
  • Zachary Quinto as Spock. Quinto pursued the role as he was interested in Spock’s duality (the character is half-human, half Vulcan),[5] and was also fascinated “that he is constantly exploring that notion of how to evolve in a responsible way and how to evolve in a respectful way. I think those are all things that we as a society, and certainly the world could implement.”[12] He bound his fingers to practice the Vulcan salute, and shaved his eyebrows and grew and dyed his hair for the role. Quinto commented the physical transformation aided in portraying an alien.[5] Adrien Brody had discussed playing the role with the director before Quinto was cast.[13]
    • Leonard Nimoy plays the old Spock, who has come from the future to aid his younger self.[14] Nimoy befriended Quinto after being cast in the role.[15] Had Nimoy disliked the script, production would have been delayed for it to be rewritten.[16] Roberto Orci said Nimoy’s presence would “resolve continuity issues” and give an “appropriate transfer” to the new version of the Enterprise crew.[17] Nimoy was “genuinely excited” by the script’s scope and its detailing of the characters’ backstories,[12] saying, “We have dealt with [Spock being half-human, half-Vulcan], but never with quite the overview that this script has of the entire history of the character, the growth of the character, the beginnings of the character and the arrival of the character into the Enterprise crew.”[18]
    • Jacob Kogan will play Spock as a child.[19]
  • Karl Urban as Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy. Like Pine, Urban said of taking on the role that “it is a case of not doing some sort of facsimile or carbon copy, but really taking the very essence of what DeForest [Kelley] has done and honoring that and bringing something new to the table”. Urban has been a fan of the show since he was seven years old and actively pursued the role.[20]
  • Simon Pegg as Montgomery “Scotty” Scott. To perform Scotty’s accent, Pegg was assisted by his Scottish wife.[8] He described Scotty as a positive Scottish stereotype, noting “Scots are the first people to laugh at the fact that they drink and fight a bit”, and that Scotty comes a long line of Scots with technical expertise, such as John Logie Baird and Alexander Graham Bell. Years before, Pegg’s character in Spaced joked that every odd-numbered Star Trek film being “shit” was a fact of life. Pegg noted “Fate put me in the movie to show me I was talking out of my ass.”[21]
    • Chris Doohan, the son of the original Scotty, James Doohan, makes a cameo appearance in the transporter room. Pegg has e-mailed Doohan about the role, and the actor has promised him his performance “would be a complete tribute to his father”.[8] Chris Doohan previously cameoed in Star Trek: The Motion Picture.
    • Paul McGillion auditioned for Scotty, and he impressed producers enough that he was given another role in the film.[22]
  • Zoe Saldana as Uhura. Abrams had liked her work and requested that she play the role. Saldana never saw the original series, but agreed to play the role after Abrams had complimented her. “For an actor, that’s all you need, that’s all you want. To get the acknowledgement and respect from your peers,” she said. She met with Nichelle Nichols, who explained to her how she had created Uhura’s background, and also named the character.[23]
  • John Cho as Hikaru Sulu. Abrams was concerned about casting a Korean-American as a Japanese-Filipino character, but George Takei explained to the director that Sulu was meant to represent all of Asia on the Enterprise, so Abrams went ahead with Cho.[24] Cho acknowledged being an Asian-American, “there are certain acting roles that you are never going to get, and one of them is playing a cowboy. [Playing Sulu] is a realization of that dream — going into space.” He cited the masculinity of the character as being important to him, and spent two weeks fight training.[25] Cho suffered an injury to his wrist during filming, although a representative assured it was “no big deal”.[26] James Kyson Lee was interested in the part, but because Quinto was cast as Spock, the producers of the TV show Heroes did not want to lose another cast member for three months.[27]

Filming began on November 7, 2007.[65] The shoot was to last eighty-five days, taking place on eleven sets built at the Paramount backlot, as well as two weeks of location shooting in Iceland.[15] Filming was also done at the City Hall of Long Beach, California;[66] Vasquez Rocks (a location used in the classic episode “Arena“);[33] and the California State University, Northridge (which was used for establishing shots of students at Starfleet Academy).[67] A car park outside Dodger Stadium was used for a section of a Romulan drilling rig,[68] and an industrial location was used for the Enterprise’s engines (although the rest of the ship’s rooms were built as sets).[36] Principal photography finished on March 27, 2008,[69] although second unit filming took place during early April in Bakersfield, California, standing in for Kirk’s childhood home in Iowa.[70]

Following the commencement of the Writers Guild of America strike on November 5, 2007, Abrams, himself a WGA member, told Variety that while he would not render writing services for the film and intended to walk the picket line, he did not expect the strike to impact his directing of the production.[71] In the final few weeks before the strike and start of production, Abrams and Damon Lindelof polished the script a final time.[72] Abrams was frustrated that he was unable to alter lines during the strike, whereas normally they would have been able to improvise new ideas during rehearsal. Lines may still be altered with dubbing.[73]

The production team maintained heavily enforced security around the film. Karl Urban revealed, “[There is a] level of security and secrecy that we have all been forced to adopt. I mean, it’s really kind of paranoid crazy, but sort of justified. We’re not allowed to walk around in public in our costumes and we have to be herded around everywhere in these golf carts that are completely concealed and covered in black canvas. The security of it is immense. You feel your freedom is a big challenge.”[74] Actors like Jennifer Morrison were only given the scripts of their scenes.[34] The film’s shooting script was fiercely protected even with the main cast. Simon Pegg said “I read [the script] with a security guard near me – it’s that secretive.”[75] The film’s fake working title was Corporate Headquarters.[76]

Early years

Guerrero was born in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of Walter Coles and Lucy Guerrero. Her mother was from Chile. Guerrero spent her childhood living in San Diego and Huntington Beach, California. In 1972, when Lisa was 8 years old, her mother died. To cope with the loss, her father enrolled her in theater therapy. Her father ran a family business and her grandparents were involved in The Salvation Army.

Career

Guerrero began her show-business career in the 1980s as a cheerleader for the Los Angeles Rams. After being a cheerleader for the Rams, she moved on to be the entertainment director for the Atlanta Falcons and New England Patriots. Later, in the 1990s, she moved on to star in Aaron Spelling’s Sunset Beach. In 1997, she became a sports-anchor on Los AngelesKCBS station and later KTTV station.

In 1999, she moved to the Fox Network, where she participated in such shows as Sports Geniuses, Fox Overtime, Fox Extra Innings and the Toughman competition shows. She travelled to Egypt to tape the special Opening the Tombs of the Golden Mummies. Guerrero also starred in the San Diego Chargers magazine-style television show. She also co-hosted The Best Damn Sports Show Period, alongside Tom Arnold and Michael Irvin, among others.

In 2003, she left The Best Damn Sports Show Period to join ABC’s Monday Night Football television crew. Her performance on the broadcast was heavily criticized. She defended herself by saying that the show hired her with the intention of going in a totally different direction with the job of sideline reporter — personality-driven and feature-driven — then discarded all of that and told her to just do the job in the usual fashion. She said that she never would have taken the job if she had known that they would change their minds like that. [1] The following year ABC replaced her with Michele Tafoya.

The Los Angeles Times has called Guerrero, the hardest working sports reporter. The Hispanic Business Journal named her one of the 100 most influential Hispanics in America. On February 3, 2004 Guerrero married professional baseball pitcher Scott Erickson.

In December 2005, the then 41-year old Guerrero posed nude for the January 2006 issue of Playboy. [2] After her pictorial, Guerrero said that Playboy had asked her to pose for the magazine in the mid-1980s but as a young model it felt like crossing the line. [1] It was said director Michael Lesner had discouraged her from doing it at that time.[citation needed]

On June 15, 2006, Guerrero became a correspondent on the TV newsmagazine Inside Edition. Guerrero also became the co-host of VH1’s game show The World Series of Pop Culture. Since Guerrero’s arrival at Inside Edition, the show’s ratings went up 17 percent. In February 2007, Inside Edition viewers got the chance to dress Guerrero up for the 79th Academy Awards. Viewers voted online to choose what Guerrero will wear to the show.

On October 6, 2008, Guerrero referred to Sarah Palin as a “monkey” on her blog. She said “All in all it’s been a rough few days for the monkeys. On Friday night, the Angels’ Rally Monkey let down the home crowd in Anaheim. Although the team triumphed Sunday night in Boston, you can’t credit the monkey unless he sneaked into Jared Weaver’s suitcase. On Saturday, John McCain’s rally monkey, Sarah Palin, popped up in Carson. Fresh off of her victory over herself at the debate, her campaign let Palin out of the cage to rev up the fan base.”

Personal life

Lisa Guerrero lives in Malibu, California and Lake Tahoe, Nevada.

She has posed for Playboy [2], FHM and Maxim magazines and hosted the Hispanic Heritage Month banquet at The White House in 2003. She guest-starred in Seinfeld, Frasier (the ‘Odd Man Out’ and ‘Frasier’s Imaginary Friend’ episodes), The George Lopez Show and as scheming Francesca Vargas in NBC’s Sunset Beach.

Recently, Lisa has appeared at Quiet Cannon banquet center at Montebello, California to honor the top ten students of each grade level for the high school Cantwell Sacred Heart of Mary.
